A professional soccer team faced a challenge common in sports marketing: increasing season ticket sales while maintaining high demand for single-game tickets throughout the year. With a young, digitally savvy fan base, the team needed a fresh approach beyond traditional TV and radio ads. That’s where digital marketing came into play

The Game Plan: A Comprehensive Digital Strategy

Previously, the team's ticket sales relied heavily on traditional media tactics. However, recognizing the shift in fan engagement, we helped them refocus on digital channels. Social media, already a strong presence for the soccer team, became the foundation for driving both awareness and ticket sales

Early in the season, we implemented Mobile Conquesting tactics, including

  • Address Targeting and Geo-Retargeting for past ticket purchasers,
  • Geo-Fencing at local sporting venues, family entertainment centers, and other points of interest, targeting sports enthusiasts in the region.

As the season progressed, we layered in Social Media and Social Mirror Ads to further boost awareness and encourage online ticket purchasing

To keep the excitement alive between games, we launched Amazon Video, OTT, and Display Ads showcasing game highlights and promoting upcoming matches. These were targeted at sports fans, soccer lovers, and families. The campaign was also strategically flighted to push out promotions for the next game immediately after each match, with a concentrated push 3-4 days before the next event

Results That Kicked Goals

This digital-focused approach led to an outstanding season for the soccer team. After a year of campaign optimization, the results were nothing short of remarkable

  • The overall click-through rate (CTR) across all digital platforms reached 0.93%, well above industry averages.
  • Social Media ads saw CTRs as high as 3.5%.
  • A significant spike in ticket sales was recorded 72 hours before each game, breaking previous records for both season and single-game ticket sales.

The Director of Ticketing shared, “100% of our media plan was dedicated to digital, and the results showed! We attribute all our success to the advanced digital tactics combined with our compelling visuals and video! Next season will be a repeat of what we adopted this season!
